There are several state and/or federal licenses, permits and/or requirements that you need to be aware of as you start a business. While my list below is not meant to be a complete list, the following items are a good place to start:
-
Business Licenses - This is the main legal document required by states to allow your business to conduct business activities as well as file taxes correctly.
-
Product Licenses - To sell certain products (e.g., liquor, tickets), businesses need licenses. Each state has its own requirements so please check your state’s product license requirements.
-
Occupational Licenses - Certain occupations require licenses. For example, accountants need to be licensed to perform their services. Each state is unique so please check with your state to ensure you have the proper occupational licenses.
-
State Tax Registration - For states with state income tax, your company will need an employee identification number (commonly referred to as an EIN). You are able to obtain an EIN from your state department. It is fairly routine process and should only take 10-15 minutes.
-
Sales Tax Registration - If your company plans to engage in retail sales, you must obtain a sales tax license. Again, this is typically done through your state department. If you plan to have an e-commerce business only, you will still need a sales tax license.
